Music: “The Letting Go” and More
Shortly before I left Chicago, my cousin Dave gave me a copy of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s latest CD, “The Letting Go.” Wow! What a discovery! I’m absolutely loving this album. It turns out that Bonnie “Prince” Billy is really Will Oldham, who last year acted in a critically-acclaimed indie film titled “Old Joy.” If you’re hankering for some fresh, unique and moving folk-rock, give this a listen.
So far on the road, the only album I’ve listened to is Ray LaMontagne’s latest, “Till the Sun Turns Black.” It’s sweet and melancholy (yes both) and great traveling music. And it’s clearly what my soul has needed – I’ve listened to the entire album about six times already!
My good friend Jeff Winkle (”Wink”) is a classics professor at Calvin College — and he happens to be a super-talented singer/songwriter. (He’s also the author of the highly entertaining blog, Adventures in Absurdia.) For the past several years, Wink has played in a cover band called Five Minutes Tardy. At most gigs, the band plays a few songs that Wink wrote. One of my favorite Wink songs is called “Visual Purple” — and I’m pumped to announce that you can now hear it on the band’s MySpace page. I’ll leave you with a lyric from the song: “Hold on, stay here, it gets better.”

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
