Some Up-and-Coming Female Singer-Songwriters
Here are some ladies worth checking out. I linked to their MySpace pages so you can listen to a few of their songs.
+ Ingrid Michaelson – I saw her perform recently as part of the Hotel Cafe Tour, and she stole the show! She’s funny, smart, vulnerable, engaging and really talented! At this point she’s probably best known for her song “The Way I Am,” which is getting radio play.
+ Yael Naim – This French girl has her own sweet, delicate sound. Here in the States she’s probably best known for her song “New Soul,” which is featured on the Macbook Air commercial. On her recently released album, she sings in English and Hebrew (yep, Hebrew).
+ Laura Gibson – If you want melancholy, check out this Portland, Oregon-based crooner. Her songs are stark, simple, deep (and sometimes dark). Even though it’s now spring, don’t miss the song, “Wintering.”
+ Kate Walsh – She has a very sweet, warm sound. Her sound isn’t as distinct as the others in this list, but very enjoyable.
+ SoKo – Based in Paris, SoKo definitely has a distinct sound. I love her writing … very funny, honest and poetic. She’s a great storyteller and conjures some great images. Don’t miss “I Will Never Love You More.” (A shout out to Gena for introducing me to SoKo.)

Hey AP, it still snows here
. Anyway, I got the Yael CD when it came out — it’s great! I am LOVING right now the Zooey Deschanel and M Ward CD — Volume One. They are under the name She & Him. Zooey is in movies (Elf, Almost Famous) and M Ward is an indie genius. Together they are sweet. Check them out. They have a myspace under She & Him.

Hamz! Cubz! Tough first game … but I’m so pumped the season has started … BUT … I’m sure I’m not as pumped as YOU! (By the way, it seems Fuk-you-do-me is the man! Let’s hope.)
OK, music, I’m listening to She & Him as I type (”I should know”). I’m really diggin’ it! I love the old-time music sound. Very rich … gets to my heart. Thanks for the tip … keep ‘em comin’!
I love and miss you!

OH my gosh. I love the Cubs. I’m obsessed with them. Kerry Wood is my new science fiction. I adore him. I am hoping with everything this is the year. Opening day with Fukudome’s 9th inning HR was a moment that I’ll always have. Hugging, high five-ing and electicity. It can’t be repeated.
I’m also obsessed with Kate Nash’s song ‘Foundations’. Check out the video on YouTube. Her accent is brilliant. I’m listening to it right now over and over again! She’s a little darker fit to me.
You said I must eat so many lemons…cuz I’m so bit-ter
I said I’d rather be with your friends, mate cuz they are much fit-ter

Hamerrz, you’re killin’ me! Cracking me up! I love “Kerry Wood is my new science fiction.” I have no idea what you mean, yet I think I do know what you mean.
I’m with ya, though, CUBS FEVER, I’m feelin’ it!
I listened to the Kate Nash song (I watched the YouTube video). I liked the writing. I liked the song as a whole … didn’t love it … but liked it. Keep the tips comin’!
Question for ya (and this has nothing to do with the Kate Nash song), what does the phrase “fair play” mean? The girl from the movie “Once” said that phrase a few times. I think it means “props,” such as, “Props to Ham for telling me about She & Him and Kate Nash.” I like “fair play,” partly cause I think it originates from the world of soccer.

Fair play. Hmmm…not sure. I might have to watch Once again to see how she uses it. But you are probably right! They’ve got all these wonderful phrases over there that I love, which is probably why Kate draws me in. I do think Kate Nash is more my style than yours I suppose. I do love finding new music though.
The Cubs had a pretty little streak going on until last night, but can’t complain. I’ve been reading some Ray Bradbury Martian Chronicles and lovin’ it, so I gave Kerry similar accolades. I personally liked that sentence when I wrote it too
Hey there is still a writer in me!
Enjoy your Cub Fever! I can’t wait to hit my next game.
